Timkat (Ethiopian Epiphany)
Every January in Gondar, Ethiopia's old imperial capital, priests carry the tabot, covered in splendid brocade, into the streets, and tens of thousands of worshippers in white chant all night. At dawn the holy water is blessed, and people scramble to leap into a 17th-century king's bath. It is one of the most staggering religious festivals in Africa.
