Humpback Whales of Tonga

Each year, humpback whales travel thousands of kilometres from Antarctic feeding grounds to Tonga’s warm waters to breed and raise calves. In the water, a mother may hover below while a curious calf circles nearby. Tonga is one of the few countries that permits in-water encounters, but a close approach is a privilege governed by current rules—not a guaranteed experience.
