Monarch Butterfly Overwintering – El Rosario Sanctuary
Every autumn, tens of millions of monarch butterflies fly about 4,000 km from the United States and Canada to land in the fir forests of central Mexico, at 3,000 metres. They hang in layered clusters that bend whole trees low, and when the sun hits, they burst into the air like an orange blizzard, the whisper of their wings audible.
