The Elephant Gathering at Minneriya

In the dry season, forests in north-central Sri Lanka shrink back and wild Asian elephants follow ancient routes to Minneriya Reservoir. At sunset, herds graze, bathe and tend to calves on the green lakebed. Known as “The Gathering,” the spectacle is one of Asia’s most remarkable wildlife scenes, though the number and location of elephants vary with water levels and food.
