Puffins of the Westman Islands

With an orange bill and a white face like it has eyeliner, the Atlantic puffin is one of the North Atlantic’s most charming seabirds. Each summer the Westman Islands become a puffin city: burrows cover grassy cliffs and, at dusk, adults return carrying beakfuls of small fish. In late summer, local children also help rescue young puffins disoriented by town lights—a conservation effort distinct from ordinary birdwatching.
