Grand Canyon National Park

From the South Rim, the Colorado River is a fine line in the layered rock; at the next overlook, the canyon opens into a vast map of color. Its scale is matched by the time recorded in its walls. Rim walks and descents into the canyon are very different outings, and distance from above is a poor guide to difficulty.
