Lewes Bonfire Night

Every 5 November, the southern English town of Lewes erupts in fire. Thousands of society members in striped jerseys and pirate costumes march with flaming torches, burning tar barrels roll down the streets, and giant satirical effigies are blown to pieces on the bonfires. This is no ordinary fireworks party but a rebellious tradition four centuries old.
