Inti Raymi

After the Southern Hemisphere's winter solstice, Cusco, more than 3,000 metres above sea level, welcomes the most sacred day of its year. The "Sapa Inca", robed in gold, is carried on a litter through the ancient city amid thousands of performers, then climbs to the stone-built fortress of Sacsayhuamán to make an offering to the sun god in Quechua. An imperial ritual of five hundred years ago is staged again before your eyes.
