Yi Peng Lantern Festival

Each year at the full moon of the twelfth Thai lunar month, Chiang Mai's old walls glow with candles, temples hang with coloured lanterns, and paper sky lanterns rise one by one into the dark. Yi Peng is the Lanna people's way of sending away misfortune and welcoming light, and for many travellers a once-in-a-lifetime night scene.
