Historic Route 66

Route 66 became a U.S. highway in 1926 and its historic alignment crossed eight states, linking Chicago with the Pacific coast of California. Along the way, Illinois farmland and Missouri hills give way to Oklahoma plains, then New Mexico and Arizona desert before Santa Monica. It was decommissioned in 1985; today’s trip stitches together surviving historic segments and interstate highways.
