Nyepi (Balinese Day of Silence) & Ogoh-ogoh Parade

Bali's new year has two faces. The night before, giant demon effigies called Ogoh-ogoh charge through the streets amid torches and gongs. From 6 a.m. the next morning, the whole island goes dark, work stops and no one may go out, even the airport closes. From uproar to absolute silence takes just one night.
