Vatnajökull Ice Cave

The blue inside an ice cave is not artificial lighting; it is the color of light passing through thick ice. Meltwater and refreezing reshape passages in Vatnajökull each year. The walls may be clear, deep blue or streaked with dark sediment. The cave you enter may not be the one in last year’s photographs. That is what makes a winter visit feel like a brief invitation inside a living glacier.
