Cherry Blossom Season in Japan

Every spring, the Japanese spend an entire season chasing a single flower. From Okinawa's crimson in January to Hokkaido's snow-white in May, the cherry blossom front creeps north like a slow pink tide. In Kyoto, more than four hundred cherry trees form a flowered corridor along the canal on the Philosopher's Path, petals dropping onto the water to drift away as a slowly flowing raft of blossom.
